i think portland sabotaged my train to seattle
the engine has exploded…
is this a sign that we are meant to be together, portland?
or are you just jealous that seattle gets to put its emerald fingers all over my portfolio for the foreseeable future?
do not worry my rosey love, i will return

Chocoholic Giant Fish Gorged On Kit Kats
4:20pm UK, Monday August 01, 2011
Aquarium staff have managed to wean a chocoholic giant fish onto a healthier diet after inheriting the gourami, raised entirely on Kit Kats by its owners.
Gary the giant gourami ballooned on his Kit Kat diet
At first, staff at the Sea Life London Aquarium were baffled by the 4kg fish’s refusal to eat until they...
TNG and Bri.
The New Group has already taught me so much and I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about the processes and digital marketing space from people who are not only experts, but also students of everything digital. I’m just a sponge right now and can’t wait to absorb more information while I can.
In other news, after a discussion with Aaron and another with Steve, I did some...
Well I've been walking for an hour....
Small town girl working in Portland = getting lost looking for The New Group. Don’t judge me, they tell me it’s pretty easy to do… I just hope they weren’t saying that to be nice.
Other than getting myself terribly lost today, TNG was good! I was invited to sit in on a new client meeting all day and it was super informative. All three agencies have been very different so...

Sleep On It
A couple of weeks ago during our Friday meeting at Henry V, we had an amazing opportunity to talk with Jerry Ketel about our campaigns. Since both groups were in the midst of the “creative brainstorm” process, Jerry brought up some pointers that I found really interesting. The one that stood out to me the most was his take on the brains two separate ”thinking” states:...

Good Intern, Good
I will have to agree and disagree with Michael’s last blog post. Yes, we slack on our blogging. But who doesn’t? I personally spend more time reading blog posts then actually writing them. I would assume others do the same.
In agreement, Michael’s point about us interns being extremely busy is definitely spot on. Between our 9-5 agency jobs and spending countless hours on our Moonstruck work… the...
Bad Intern, Bad
Whoops. Turns out I’m not so good at this blogging thing after all. The fact is I’ve been extremely busy between my agencies and Moonstruck work, but I promise to take a more active role in blogging from now on.
So, now that we got that out of the way, let me say that I have been having the time of my life here in Portland. I am currently working at Grady Britton, smack dab in the...
Thoughts on a Monday
OK so it’s the start of week 4 here at COLAB and thats kind of blowing my mind. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a summer go by faster than this (probably because I normally hate summers… All the sun and working summer jobs….). It feels like I was at orientation meeting everyone just a couple days ago,not four weeks. At least I can say it has been a fantastic experience and I’ve had a blast at all...
Research
Hello Food Marketing Institution… ask me about your groceries ;) . I am learning some interesting fact about the retail industry. For example I spend on average $20 less then what the average signal american buys in groceries each week. Thank you mom for teaching me how to bargain shop and Dad thanks for the endless supply of fruit.
I'm a slacker.
No excuses, I’m a blogging slacker.
In other news, I’ll update a little on my last few weeks.
I loved HMH and everything I did there. I learned so much from Lisa and feel that with more time there, I would have been able to take over the PR department no problem. Is that why we only stay at agencies for 2 weeks? Tricky, tricky.
Now I’m at Pop Art! What a change, and definitely...
Strikin the Anvil
So after two wonderful weeks at Grady Britton it was finally time I move on to my second agency, Anvil Media Inc. I started off my first day at Anvil like a spent most of my time at GB, doing research. But I’m ok with that because in my opinion I’m becoming a fantastic researcher. Anvil is a very cool place that is basically just one big room where everyone works in desk pods. It’s very hip and...
Chocoholics Anonymous
So I took two trips to Moonstruck today… I have been telling my mother I have been doing “extensive product research”. How long do you think that will last? I just can’t stop eating their chocolate its just so dang good.

Cuts from the Anvil Stereo
Nothing better then getting to play a little music for the entire office during my last hour spent at Anvil. Here was the lineup… hopefully it hit everyones musical tastes.
“Circle of Life” - Lion King
“Space Jam” - Jock Jams
“Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It” - Will Smith
“Where’s The Party At” - Jagged Edge
“Sweet Home...

Sadly last day at Emerge
So today is sadly my last day at Emerge Interactive. During my time here I had an opportunity to research triathlons and charities. From that research I got a chance to build a site map completely from what I learned from my research. After that phase I was able to make a wireframe for the copywriter and designer to reference when continuing to build the website. I also was able to create a...

Frank Advice... "Act Big"
Biggest takeaway from our B2B discussion yesterday at Frank Creative:
“Act Big in Small Places”
With chocolate being a hyper-competitive space, especially within grocery and retail outlets, it isn’t enough to just get the product on the shelf. Why would you choose Moonstruck over Hershey’s? Placing Moonstruck Tumbled Chocolates in every Safeway in the country isn’t...
A day in the life of Erika....
So I was walking down the street, like people do. When I cross the path of a bum holding a sign that read “Anything Will Help”. As I profiled this poor man I thought “wow he really does need help”. His clothes were nasty old and torn. He looked like he hadn’t showered in days. You know, really fitting the part of being “homeless”. Until I notice one...
COLAB so far
I couldn’t ask for a more excellent first week. The folks at Ascentium have been more than willing to help me understand the inner workings of an agency and share their insight about the industry at large. I’ve been brought into a number of meetings over the past 5 days and I feel like my opinion is respected and listened to - I’ve even been put to work on some really...
First Client Meeting
Smooth sailing in my first client meeting. Thanks to the help of Sunyi, Dan and Julian at Emerge Interactive. I am now working on Key words to be placed within the website for better search optimization. I am looking forward to seeing the end results of a complete website in the near future. :) I also learned a new vocab word thanks to Sunyi who let me sit in on a project meeting.
FUB- Which...

SEM wha?
Well after many digital quarks and failed invites, i’ve finally managed to get myself onto the COLAB tumblr. Like Erika, I now must catch everyone up with my blog posts. Here was one I wrote last week:
There are only six weeks of COLAB… but a lifetimes worth of knowledge and opportunities. That’s what i’ve already realized after week one. I knew coming in that six weeks was going to fly by...
Tumblr 1 Erika 0
So I finally figured out tumblr…. Here are some of my old blogs. Sorry they are not in order.
Tumblr- 1 Erika- 0
I am currently learning how to wireframe and make site maps. I can’t wait to use my new skills in the future. Thanks Emerge! Also I received some really good insight about our Moonstruck project from Jullian, Sunyi and Dan. Looking forward to share my discoveries during the...
Pop Art // Week One
My first week at Pop Art Inc. was AWESOME. My first day, I got to try some amazing organic lollipops and play the role as the office dj. I’m working with some truly talented people full of positive energy. I’ve had a great look into what it takes to run as an agency and how valuable meetings can be for creating strategies and working together to deliver the best product to the...
First week with Grady Britton
As the first full week being a COLAB intern comes to an end I’ve learned a number of things. Most importantly this is shaping up to even more awesome internship than PAF advertised. I’m working with the PR department at Grady Britton and it’s been amazing. The people there are great and spend lots of time answering my questions. They have also put me to work doing real things which is surprising...
First Day x Two
First days at work can sometimes be like first dates, at least for me: I get dressed up, I sweat a lot, and I try to leave a positive first impression. This past week, my first for COLAB, I was fortunate enough to try out two agencies for the first time. My assigned first agency, FRANK, took Tuesday off, so I went to Ascentium with Pat for a copywriter double date (it wasn’t that much of a date;...
First days...
First day at HMH yesterday went well! I’m so fortunate to be part of this internship and get to learn from people who love to do their job (if you can even call something this fun, that) everyday. I was surrounded today by people willing to teach me and help me grow and I’m looking forward to the week ahead and the agencies that follow.
I’m most looking forward to learning some crisis...
First Day at Emerge Interactive!
Awesome first day! So excited about my project. I AM BEYOND DELIGHTED that I have an actual project to work on. I get to setup meetings and what not. (SO CLOSE TO THE REAL DEAL!) I feel like this great way to start off the week. Also I was really happy that Sunyi and Ross took me out to some awesome Italian restaurant for lunch. They really made me feel welcome. :) I am really enjoying the lax...

Final Word.
After being an intern this summer, I thought I’d make a little COLAB guide to help future applicants and interns. Take it or leave it, but these are some things I would’ve liked to know when I started… Before you apply: A lot of people apply. I’d say increase your chances with a little ad research. Now, no one expects you to be the next Don Draper, but you should be familiar with some...

This is happening
I wanted you all to be the first to know. I’m making the big move to Portland- couldn’t have done it without #COLABpdx. I’m equally off-the-wall excited and scared shitless. Here we go…
RIP #COLABpdx
Damn.
It’s all over! Well, it has been for a week and a half now, but I’m just starting to figure out life without COLAB. Since I last posted while I was at Babcock & Jenkins, I guess this post needs to do a little updating as well. After BNJ I crossed the bridge to the Couv, where I spent 8 days at AHA! (Alling Henning Associates). In keeping with the trend, AHA! was completely...

Can I get a COLAB rehab?
Hello world!
Well it’s official, the chance-of-a-lifetime internship has come to an end! But what a glorious end it was, my friends! On Friday both Hi-Res and Knack presented our best ideas to Kathy and John, the Tillamook representatives, as well as an audience of our COLAB mentors and supporters.
We arrived before 9 am at Pop Art, and practiced our presentations until 12. Now,...
