1. SEM wha?

Well after many digital quarks and failed invites, i’ve finally managed to get myself onto the COLAB tumblr. Like Erika, I now must catch everyone up with my blog posts. Here was one I wrote last week:

There are only six weeks of COLAB… but a lifetimes worth of knowledge and opportunities. That’s what i’ve already realized after week one. I knew coming in that six weeks was going to fly by and I was going to have to do my best to soak in as much as possible. So far, I feel like I’ve been succeeding. To learn more about my COLAB Marble team and our current project, read Erika and Bri’s posts below!

I started my internship last Tuesday at Anvil Media Inc. Coming into the agency, I’ll admit I knew almost nothing about SEM (search engine marketing), which is Anvil’s specialty. But this gave me even more reason to want to learn. After sitting in on client meetings, interacting with fellow employees, and having talks with Kent (the owner) – I can honestly say that I have an even stronger drive now to educate myself in this niche field. Partly because it intrigues me, and also because I don’t like “not knowing” how something works. With that being said, I’ve made it a goal for myself to test for my Google Analytics certificate by the end of the summer.  I figure it is a great tool to know, whether I want to continue in SEM or not. Wish me luck.

Other than learning how Google Analytics works, here are just a couple of terms i’ve picked up at Anvil in the last week:

A+B Testing : Essentially is testing one advertisement against another with minor variations. Can test the click-through rate to determine which ad attracts customers more.

Competitive Ad Bidding: A company can actually “bid” for a competitors name keyword in order for their company advertisement to be displayed. Ex: You type in Hershey’s to google and an ad for Moonstruck Chocolates comes up on the side. Interesting…

Landing Pages: Pages you are taken to after clicking an ad other than the main webpage in order to optimize the user experience. They can be tested in different layouts in order to determine post-click optimization for the customer.

With only two more days left working at Anvil, I hope to get even deeper into the SEM “lingo”. I just got assigned a “mini” SEM project by Kent to evaluate PDXmindshares website and pitch ways to optimize it further. Hopefully through this project, and continued white page readings, I will be able to better understand what everyone is talking about around me :)
