4:20pm UK, Monday August 01, 2011

Aquarium staff have managed to wean a chocoholic giant fish onto a healthier diet after inheriting the gourami, raised entirely on Kit Kats by its owners.

Gary the giant gourami ballooned on his Kit Kat diet

At first, staff at the Sea Life London Aquarium were baffled by the 4kg fish’s refusal to eat until they learned it had been fed nothing but chocolate.

The team then stuffed crushed Kit Kat pieces inside grapes to get the 40cm-long gourami named Gary to “take a break” from his daily fix.

“I have never heard of a fish being fed chocolate, let alone being brought up entirely on the stuff,” said Gary’s handler, Rebecca Carter.

“Gouramis usually eat a diet of fruit but Gary doesn’t appear to have suffered any ill effects from his chocolate addiction,” she added.

“However, we would not recommend feeding fish confectionery of any kind.”

Gary is not the only unusual creature to come to the centre from private owners.

Close by the gourami lives Ed, a catfish with decidedly cat-like tendencies.

Ed will only accept being hand fed and likes to be stroked on the head at the same time.

He has also learned to head-butt a lethal puffer fish who vies for his food, staff said.

But aquarium staff warn that Gary and Ed’s peculiar interest in food highlights a more serious issue.

They have nicknamed one display the “tank busters” tank, because it houses a number of large fish that simply grew too big for their owners to manage.

“Many people don’t do the right research when they buy fish and end up unable to care for them,” said Ms Carter.

“We’re delighted we could find a home for Gary but the fact is we simply do not have the space to accommodate the vast number of re-homing requests we receiv

Moonstruck is now a staple of our very existence.

Moonstruck is now a staple of our very existence.

TNG and Bri.

The New Group has already taught me so much and I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to learn about the processes and digital marketing space from people who are not only experts, but also students of everything digital. I’m just a sponge right now and can’t wait to absorb more information while I can.

In other news, after a discussion with Aaron and another with Steve, I did some research on content strategy and what it means in this massive marketplace of ideas, concepts and marketing. I’m absolutely fascinated by everything I’m reading. You’re telling me there’s a job that combines my love of research, writing and strategy? Well that seems too good to be true.

With people tuning out television commercials, flipping past magazine ads and simply ignoring banner ads, it is no wonder that content is becoming increasingly important in any form of marketing. Not to mention how short attention spans are these days. Good content marketing makes a person stop, read, think and behave differently.

Big thanks to TNG for making my first week educational and inspiring.

a belated thank you to erica for the amazing sweetheart cherries...

a belated thank you to erica for the amazing sweetheart cherries from her family farm

Don’t judge me, they tell me it’s pretty easy to do… I just hope they weren’t saying that to be nice.

Other than getting myself terribly lost today, TNG was good! I was invited to sit in on a new client meeting all day and it was super informative. All three agencies have been very different so far and I can’t wait to see what else TNG has for me. This is going to be cut short because I have massive amounts of Moonstruck to work on, but let me just say, I heart Colab. Times two.

Until next time,
Bri.

“If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” —quote from the client today that I feel is extremely fitting for today/my life.

Sleep On It

A couple of weeks ago during our Friday meeting at Henry V, we had an amazing opportunity to talk with Jerry Ketel about our campaigns. Since both groups were in the midst of the “creative brainstorm” process, Jerry brought up some pointers that I found really interesting. The one that stood out to me the most was his take on the brains two separate ”thinking” states: Conscious vs Unconscious.

What’s the difference? At first I didn’t know either. But then it all began to make sense. Here is what I took away from his talk:

Conscious - The conscious mind is what we know best. It includes everything that is inside or realm of awareness. We consciously read something, say something, do something. This is the aspect of our mental processing that we think about rationally and are aware of our body doing. For example, Jerry told us that while we were sitting and “creatively” brainstorming, we all were consciously trying to THINK of ideas.

Unconscious - The quick explanation of the unconscious mind is those times when our body is concentrating on something else, but our mind is wandering. Think back to those times when a random idea pops into your head when you weren’t even thinking about it. Maybe you were taking a shower or going on a run. Consciously your body was focusing on a different task, but unconsciously your mind was wandering.

The idea of “sleeping on it” is where this all comes into play. If you are ever in the midst of trying to actively think of an idea, sometimes you need to do just the opposite - not think. Go on a walk or run, and just let your mind do the work for you.

One last piece of advice from Jerry - “always keep a notepad by your bed”. Nighttime and the morning are prime times for your unconscious mind to generate ideas. So write them down!

-Scott Rousseau

Good Intern, Good

I will have to agree and disagree with Michael’s last blog post. Yes, we slack on our blogging. But who doesn’t? I personally spend more time reading blog posts then actually writing them. I would assume others do the same.

In agreement, Michael’s point about us interns being extremely busy is definitely spot on. Between our 9-5 agency jobs and spending countless hours on our Moonstruck work… the only time I get to blog post is, well, in my sleep.

Don’t get me wrong, being extremely busy is NOT a bad thing, which is why this post is titled “Good Intern, Good”. I just started my second week, at my second agency – The New Group (TNG) – and I couldn’t be happier. My time here has been spent working on real client research and writing proposals and creative briefs, something i’ve really enjoyed. I’ve tried my best to help out and offer my assistance in any area I can, because these agency days just keep flying by!

Great moments at TNG thus far have included international conference calls with people who barely speak English, meeting fellow Sigma Chi Fraternity brothers, going out to Lunch with someone new everyday, and of course… a happy-hour Pizza making contest where Jenny cheated and somehow beat out my exotic wilderness meat pizza. I either lost because of my intern status… or because too many people were vegetarian? Can’t say for sure, but I do know that agency life is something I can’t wait to be a part of on a full-time basis. Maybe then I’ll win a pizza making competition…

As for the Moonstruck campaign, I’m very happy with where Team Marble is headed. After developing a detailed waterfall calendar and talking with everyone about their specific duties, I feel completely confident that we won’t be at each other’s throats by the end of the internship. We are making great progress and although I don’t want to say we are “ahead of schedule”, I think we are in a spot that will allow us to produce the best work possible and not half-ass anything. I’m looking forward to our finished products. Stay tuned!

Turns out I’m not so good at this blogging thing after all. The fact is I’ve been extremely busy between my agencies and Moonstruck work, but I promise to take a more active role in blogging from now on.

So, now that we got that out of the way, let me say that I have been having the time of my life here in Portland. I am currently working at Grady Britton, smack dab in the middle of my second week. I love the atmosphere here; everyone is very friendly, relaxed and we have Razor scooters to get around. I’ve been handed my fair share of work as well, so definitely keeping busy all day. Also, I have been gifted the nickname “MT Hammer”, so let’s hope that one sticks. Also also, we played softball and kicked some a**.

Great progress is also being made on the Moonstruck front. I don’t want to give away our campaign in case the other team is reading this, but let’s just say a giraffe, a skywriter, and half a dozen copies of Full House: Season Two on DVD factor heavily into our strategy. Or do they…? DUN DUN DUN!!! They don’t.

Thoughts on a Monday

OK so it’s the start of week 4 here at COLAB and thats kind of blowing my mind. I don’t know if I’ve ever had a summer go by faster than this (probably because I normally hate summers… All the sun and working summer jobs….). It feels like I was at orientation meeting everyone just a couple days ago,not four weeks. At least I can say it has been a fantastic experience and I’ve had a blast at all the places I’ve been.

Today I started my second week at Anvil Media Inc. and continued working on examining some websites and doing some basic SEO auditing. It’s definitely been a learning experience (and involved more than a little bit of using Google to figure out what exactly I’m looking at) but I think I got the hang of it now. I’m excited for the rest of this week but I’ll be sad to leave anvil.

On the intern campaign side of things we’re starting to get into the Nitty Gritty of our campaign and finalizing some of the tactics we’re planning on using. I’m excited to start seeing some of our ideas come to life but not looking forward to all the work it’s going to take to create them.
